Meet Dr. J. Joe Hawk

Dr. J. Joe Hawk was born and raised on a farm near Mystic, IA and attended schools in Centerville, IA. It was on the farm that the importance of hard work was instilled in Dr. Hawk's character. He enjoyed playing sports including baseball, wrestling, and football all throughout school.

One of the most influential people to direct Dr. Hawk towards medicine was Mr. Russ Miller, his 9th-grade earth science teacher and junior varsity wrestling coach. Mr. Miller told him that with his love of science he should become a doctor.

While he was in 9th grade, Dr. Hawk's father was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. Taking care of his father at this time was a scary ordeal because he didn’t feel the doctors effectively explained things. It was then that he decided to become a physician himself so he could properly explain diagnoses and treatment plans to patients in a compassionate and helpful way.

Continuing His Journey to Higher Education

After high school, Dr. Hawk attended the University of Iowa and completed his undergraduate studies in biology. He was fortunate to attend the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine for medical school. While in undergrad and medical school, he worked for an immunologist, Dr. John Weiler.

Dr. John Weiler was influential in teaching him the science behind the medicine that they practice. Dr. Hawk feels that too many doctors don’t understand the science and simply follow recommendations blindly without thinking for themselves. He likes to understand why certain treatments are prescribed over others. He is, however, always willing to listen to the patient’s input.

Dr. Hawk finished his family practice residency through The Mayo Clinic where he acted as Chief Resident. He had aspirations of going back to his small town to practice. However, he shifted gears and began working in an urgent care center where he was exposed to a variety of medical situations.

After working in urgent care for some time, Dr. Hawk was then recruited to start a family practice department and an urgent care department for a physician-owned clinic. Both departments were highly successful, but Dr. Hawk still had primary care patients preferring to get their care through him instead of their own doctors. After running the Covid-19 clinic throughout the pandemic, Dr. Hawk decided it was time for a change. As a result, he established Midwest Concierge Medicine. Dr. Hawk is dedicated to ensuring his members receive the very best health care possible.

In his free time Dr. Hawk enjoys watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings. He also enjoys remodeling properties, working out, and traveling with his wife, Ashley, especially to Hawaii!
